This week is Dementia Awareness Week and dementia has been linked to mitochondrial disease. There are many different forms of dementia.

With huge thanks to my mum, Mandy, for sharing our own family's experience of it, as my Grandad had vascular dementia, and my Nan had Alzheimer's. We love and miss them both everyday.

“My mum started getting forgetful and doing a few strange things. She would go out visiting very early in the morning not realising the time. For a long time, she coped quite well. At around the same time my dad also started acting ‘out of character’. One night he left the house in the middle of the night convinced there were people trying to get him. Both seeming to be in their own worlds. Only 2 weeks after this happened to my dad, he had a stroke. Three days later, he passed away after not waking up from the stroke. It’s only looking back I realise he too was suffering from dementia.

My mum really went downhill after dad passed away. She kept thinking he’d left her. Sometimes she wouldn’t get out of bed. She needed to be cared for to some degree. Making sure she had meals, etc, Faye and I did this every day. One day she went out on her own in her dressing gown. The police brought her home. We were worried she might forget to turn the gas off or have an accident.

Social services ended up getting involved and suggested a care home. Mum hated the idea, but it was taken out of her hands. She moved in to a home, then become aggressive. But this was only until her meds got sorted. She would forget by the afternoon what she’d done that morning. She could remember poems and songs and memories from her childhood but not what she’d done yesterday.

One thing I was grateful for she always remembered who I was. And became a happy soul despite the dementia.”
